Coco

Hi everyone! I may be a little behind on this one but I still wanted to share about Coco because this is a beautiful film in many many ways! I had the opportunity to watch it last weekend with my wife, as we've both been wanting to see this since it's initial release back around Thanksgiving. It finally came on Netflix this past week so we eagerly sat down to watch it together. This was a great movie in so many ways, and I can't wait to talk about it with you! So let's jump right in!

Coco is the story of a boy named Miguel who lives in Mexico with his large family who owns and runs a shoemaking business. Miguel aspires to be a musician, but his family has banned music for generations. In an attempt to prove the importance of music to his family during the Day of the Dead celebrations, he unknowingly enters into the Land of the Dead, and while there, seeks to find his great-great-grandfather, who was a legendary singer.

The Land of the Dead, though filled with skeletons, is both alive and vibrant in much of its architecture, scenery, and inhabitants. It is probably the most colorful movie that Disney has ever made! Each of the characters draws you deep into what the world has to offer. It brought me back to the time that my wife and I have spent in Mexico. Both the culture and family structure are authentic to what it is like to live there. It was as if I was transported back to an animated version of where we visited!

I'll keep much of the movie's plot under wraps as I watched it only having seen the teaser for it, and I'd like to give you a similar opportunity. Coco is an enchanting movie that throws many surprises and moments of awe at you with its incredible beauty and engaging storytelling. The story may feel somewhat familiar at times, but this never takes you out of the movie itself. It is enthralling, exciting and humorous all at once! And the final act of the movie is one of the most heartwarming I have seen.

Miguel's character is a silly, outgoing and kind boy who wants nothing more than to become a world-famous musician. But, because of his family's beliefs, he can do nothing of the sort. This is the main theme throughout the story. Learning the balance between the pursuing of our own dreams and desires, and honoring family and the love that is shared there. It is a challenge for anyone, no matter your age.

I love any movie that has a strong theme of family down to the very core. Each and every family is different and unique in their own way. God made each member of every family and placed them together for a reason. Throughout Coco, Miguel contends with a few of his relatives due to his and their different beliefs. Many of us can struggle with the same type of situation in our own family. We are human after all. It's not until we take the time to listen to each other, and seek guidance from the Lord, that we can genuinely understand where the other is coming from, and appreciate that different way of thinking.

Even beyond the relations with our blood families, in the body of Christ, we are all family. The Bible even tells us in Proverbs 18:24 that "there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." I think it is amazing that the Lord has given us the ability to relate to each other so closely with such a strong bond. Colossians 3:13 reminds us to "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance with someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

Miguel learns this lesson in a powerful way throughout his story. Life is so much better when you are doing it with the people God brings into your life. Each one is there for a reason. You may feel like Miguel did at first, not understanding the purpose of something. But God knows, and He created us to be relational beings that share each other's burdens and victories.

Like Miguel, you may have big dreams, and any dream from the right perspective and with the right vision can be invaluable to you. God gave us the ability to dream up goals and desires for our lives, and He wants to see us achieve those. Family can play an essential part in achieving those dreams. In Coco, Miguel learns that his dreams may not come to fruition exactly the way he expected, but, his family can be there to help him along the way.

Overall, Coco is another wonderful entry in the Disney Pixar collection. It is enjoyable for both children and adults telling a story that everyone can relate to in some kind of way. It gives viewers the opportunity to experience a culture they might not be familiar with in an authentic and exciting way. I am excited to watch this one again, and to see what other ideas and themes I pick up on along the way.

As always, thanks for reading everyone! Writing these has gradually become one of my favorite hobbies, and something that I look forward to each and every week. And now with my Facebook page (Faith & Film) to go along with it, I love having the opportunity to connect with you all more frequently. Until next time!

God bless! 😃
