Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

I recently finally had the time to watch "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and I will say, I was very happy with it! The film did great expanding the world of Harry Potter with a new story and characters that we as viewers can connect with. I love the universe of Harry Potter; it is fun & imaginative with so many takeaways and things to learn, teaching us lessons in humility, honor, and putting others first. Before watching "Fantastic Beasts", I was really curious what they would do with something that has become so well known and established in our modern culture that would make it feel fresh and new. Now, having watched the movie, I am excited for the new franchise's future!

Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) really brought a lot to love about him as a character. He was completely new to the "world of Harry Potter" that we knew, yet he was quickly relatable. This was something very important to me because if I cannot relate to a character, it makes it harder for me to learn from them. For example, Harry Potter is a VERY relatable character for most people. He struggles with many of the same things the average person does; loneliness and making friends, facing and overcoming our fears. So with a new character, I was very interested to see what new lessons I might learn from him.

As a person, Newt has many of the qualities that we as Christians desire to have in ourselves. He is a "Magizoologist" who seeks to understand the fantastic creatures living in the world around him, and share that knowledge with others. Newt is kind and loving, and has a positive outlook when faced with difficult situations. But even more than that, he is very patient and slow to anger, a peace keeper, striving to build harmony instead of dispute.

The bible itself tells us in Romans 15:5 "May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you to live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus." Newt is a great example of really living these qualities out. The creatures that he seeks out come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They each have something that makes them unique, and Newt recognizes that and takes the time to truly understand each individual creature. He sees those differences and wants to learn about them. Unfortunately, much of the magic world around him, could care less about the creatures he studies. They do not see the same beauty he does. This brings me to the main question I want to focus on; do we want to know and understand people the way that Newt does his fantastic beasts?

Every person on earth has something about them that is unique and different. So often people just push that to the side and forget about it. If we really want to help people and show them the love of Jesus, we (like Newt to his fantastic beasts) must have a desire to take the time understand that person that God has brought into our life. That person may look a bit different, or even behave strangely, but that doesn't mean they are any less valuable to God. Every person has so much potential, and through us, God can help show the rest of the world what that great potential can become! Jesus tells us himself in His Great Commission to go and make disciples of ALL nations. Acts 22:15 says: "You will be His witness to all people of what you have seen and heard." If they are willing, no one will be left out of God's plan. I want to challenge you today to really look for the beauty that is each and every person, and to focus on having a desire to know what makes a person unique. Who knows, a new friend could be just around the corner!

Feel free to share your thoughts, comments, and questions below; and have a great week!

God bless! 😃
